How to Reach Kaza
Complete route guide from Delhi, Manali, and Shimla — with distances, road conditions, and travel tips.
From Manali
Distance: 200 km
Travel Time: 10-12 hours
Route
Rohtang Pass (13,051 ft) → Gramphu → Batal → Kunzum Pass (14,931 ft) → Losar → Kaza
The most scenic route. Crosses two high passes with stunning views. Road is unpaved for long stretches — only SUVs and bikes recommended. The Manali-Rohtang route requires an Atal Tunnel or Rohtang Pass permit.
Pro Tips
- Start early (5 AM) to avoid traffic at Rohtang
- Carry extra fuel — no petrol pumps between Manali and Kaza
- Road remains closed November to May
From Shimla (via Kinnaur)
Distance: 412 km
Travel Time: 14-16 hours (2 days recommended)
Route
Shimla → Rampur → Reckong Peo → Kalpa → Nako → Tabo → Kaza
The all-season route. Follows the Sutlej and Spiti rivers through lush Kinnaur Valley. Better roads but longer distance. Stop at Kalpa or Nako for an overnight break.
Pro Tips
- This is the only winter route to Kaza
- Stop at Chitkul (last Indian village) as a detour
- Beautiful apple orchards between Rampur and Kalpa
From Delhi
Distance: 700 km (via Manali) / 800 km (via Shimla)
Travel Time: 2-3 days
Route
Delhi → Chandigarh → Manali/Shimla → Kaza
Most travelers fly or take a Volvo bus to Manali or Shimla, then continue to Kaza. From Delhi, overnight Volvo buses are available to both Manali and Shimla.
